Spouse With Personality Disorder? Here's What You Can Do

Living with a spouse with personality disorder like chronic depression, anxiety disorder, schizophrenia, narcissistic, antisocial behavior, dependent disorder, and histrionic disorder? If you recognize some of the symptoms here that cause stress in your relationship, then understand you are not only dealing with a troubled relationship but with an emotionally ill partner. Realizing this does not mean that you have to make excuses for your partner's behavior or stay with your spouse if you feel your life or happiness may be endangered.

On the contrary, knowing this should help motivate you to start taking new approaches to dealing with the source of stress. If you believe your partner is the stress, then it's time to start confronting the mental disorder, not just your partner, from whom you cannot expect rational behavior. You have a few options to consider when living with a partner who is ill:

A. You can patiently endure the relationship's highs and lows and express support. B. You can try and help your partner without conventional treatment. C. You can convince your partner to go to a psychologist or couple's therapist. D. You can convince your partner to see a psychiatrist and take medication. E. You can break up.

There are pros and cons to every option. Medication can cause many side effects, some of which may be just as difficult as the disorder itself. Therapy is helpful in theory, but convincing your partner to attend regular sessions (not to mention the cost) can be intimidating. Self-diagnosing or helping your partner on your own can be very stressful and is usually unsuccessful in the long-run. Even breaking up is not a permanent cure-all. You still may have to deal with the negative reactions of your partner not to mention live out the guilt leaving may cause.

These seven disorders are merely presented as a starting point; if you recognize some of the symptoms here that cause stress in your relationship, then understand you are not only dealing with a troubled relationship but with an emotionally ill partner. Realizing this does not mean that you have to make excuses for your partner's behavior or stay with your partner if you feel your life or happiness may be endangered.
